"ESG Manager Gillian Herpers noticed several key at Group of Butchers this year. “This year, I observed several things at Group of Butchers,” says ESG Manager Gillian Herpers. “First, I noticed that the more than twenty production sites are very aware of the reputation of the sector in which we operate. Everyone recognizes that sustainability is crucial if we want future generations to enjoy our products. Secondly, I was impressed by the willingness of everyone to support me in my role as ESG manager. Without their help, we certainly wouldn’t have achieved as much in 2023.” The dialogue with stakeholders also helped continuously improve sustainability efforts. Herpers adds, “We are truly grateful for the valuable feedback from our customers, suppliers, and financiers. Their insights and expectations continue to guide us as we remain committed to sustainability.”
Commitment tot Climate Neutrality
One of Group of Butchers’ most significant achievements in 2023 was its dedication to achieving climate neutrality. Herpers explains, “We have committed to meeting the goals of the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) for Net Zero by 2050. We have worked hard on an extensive carbon reduction plan and aim to significantly reduce our carbon footprint. This plan still requires further development.” However, action doesn’t have to wait. “For example, in the area of packaging, we have invested in sustainable materials. Additionally, we strive to reduce packaging waste. Among other initiatives, we have improved the recyclability of our packaging. A team from procurement and operations, in collaboration with several supply chain partners, developed a new combination of material and adhesive: Thermally Washable PP. This allows labels to be removed from PET trays and lids during the recycling process.”
Responsible Products
In 2023, Group of Butchers also continued its efforts toward responsible animal production by aiming for higher certification levels, such as the Beter Leven quality mark and EU Organic. “By offering organic meat, we contribute to agricultural practices that ensure sustainable food production and preserve ecosystems. We consciously source approximately seventy percent of our meat from the Netherlands, where stricter animal welfare regulations apply compared to other countries. Antibiotic use in livestock farming here has been drastically reduced in recent years, and we also avoid long animal transport distances.”
Biodiversity Efforts
This year, biodiversity also received attention. Soy production for animal feed poses a risk of deforestation. “Through our suppliers, we are linked to the risks of biodiversity loss due to ammonia emissions, monoculture, soil acidification, and land use. We have taken steps to explore alternative protein sources and diversify our product portfolio. Expanding the portfolio with plant-based products is a collaborative effort involving various companies within Group of Butchers. This collaboration creates more than just unity—it generates great ideas that lead to optimal results.”
Resource Efficiency
Gillian Herpers emphasizes that preventing food waste is a responsibility shared by the entire supply chain. “This is a critical priority for the food industry. It begins with preventing losses during harvest and extends to processing, storage, and ultimately, the consumer. This responsibility is especially significant for animal-based products. We want to treat all animal products with respect. We feel accountable not only to society but certainly also to the animals.”
In the years to come, Group of Butchers will continue to take responsibility and create positive impacts. “We will remain transparent in reporting our progress and strive for a sustainable future for everyone!”
